Education Freedom

As the principal advocates for and protectors of their own children, parents have the primary responsibility and right to direct their children’s education. We support school choice so that families can pursue educational opportunities which best suit their child’s situation. For public schooling, we support age- and developmentally appropriate curriculum with scientific, medical, and historical accuracy. Minnesota Family Council also supports transparency between schools and families.

To advance that effort, we have created a resource to guide families in communication with school leadership which is available here.

In the 2025 legislative session, Minnesota Family Council opposed attempts to cut existing funding for nonpublic education options and nonpublic transportation for Minnesota students. We also opposed attempts to limit opportunities for families seeking to homeschool their children.

Minnesota Family Council also supports the Educational Choice for Children Act, legislation included in the 2025 federal budget reconciliation bill (One Big Beautiful Bill) which allows states to create education scholarships for students through private charitable donations to qualifying scholarship granting organizations. These donations receive a federal income tax credit. One aspect of ECCA implementation is that governors must opt in to this federal tax credit option, and Governor Walz has not yet opted in to the federal tax credit option.
