“This is how I spent my shift that day, holding him,” Jean told us. “I was gazing at his perfect face as he took his last breaths and passed to the next life.”

The rest of Jean’s story will leave you outraged. Why? Because the baby in question had survived an abortion and was given no medical care, to ensure that he died.

Baby Boy Doe’s story comes from a registered nurse named Jean who previously worked in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit) at a large hospital in the Twin Cities. Jean was asked to attend an abortion since the pregnancy was far enough along that a live birth was possible and her training may be required.

The mother-to-be had tragically just been diagnosed with cancer and been told – incorrectly – that to undergo cancer treatment she must terminate her pregnancy. She was judged to be about 23 weeks gestation, right around the earliest point of viability, but no ultrasound was ordered to confirm this guess or the position of the baby in the uterus.

The woman was sedated and saline was injected into her uterus to kill the baby. He was, however, born alive. He had been burned over his entire body by the saline, but he was alive, breathing on his own without need for a ventilator or supplemental oxygen.

Jean was asked to take the baby to the NICU—but not to administer lifesaving care. No, this child would not be allowed to receive the treatment he’d need to survive.

No medical exam was administered.

No record of his birth was created.

His mother was not informed that he had survived the attempt on his life. She was told that everything went fine.

Jean took the baby boy into a private room and she held him in her arms, while he clutched her finger, breathing slowly for a few hours until he passed away.

This experience, and others that revealed the pain and manipulation of abortion, led Jean to become a pro-life advocate, and she shared this story at the Capitol before the Minnesota House Judiciary Committee back in January.
