Dr. James Herrick, Professor of Communication at Hope College and author of “The Making of the New Spirituality”, will discuss the origins of the new age and other spiritualities filling the void left by secularism, and provide insights and tactics to effectively deal with them.

Dr. Herrick will discuss the “new spiritualities” which have “now displaced the Revealed Word as the religious framework of a large and growing number of Western people.”   These new spiritualities include neo-paganism, the paranormal, astrology, nature religion, holistic thinking, and the new age.  We see them promoted on public television, Oprah Winfrey, movies like the “Matrix” and “E.T.”, in our schools, science fiction novels, even in some churches!

Ironically, these “new spiritualities” are merely the same “old” spiritualities that confronted the early church.  They find expression in modern day cults like Jehovah Witness, Scientology, and Christian Scientist and have been embraced by some of your neighbors, family members and maybe, to some degree, yourself.

Professor Herrick will use video clips, handouts and discussion to help us understand them and how we can effectively respond to them.

This is a seminar you won’t want to miss!
